Dave's Pick : Pop-Up Dictionary
Tuesday, January 8th 2002 EDT

According to studies, the older you get, the harder it is to learn a foreign language! So unless you're willing to try the total emergence method, you're gonna have to make an active effort. But with the help of the Pop-Up Dictionary you can have fun learning a variety of languages on an active basis.

You simply choose your words, set the time interval, and the program will quiz you on your ability to translate the list of words. Create a vocabulary list, choose a dictionary, or set up a word slideshow to make last minute cramming fun. Now, if creating associations makes remembering words easier, then link your words to sounds, graphics, or videos.

You can also use the program to aid you in reading texts written in another language. When you find an unknown word, you simply select the word, press a few keys, and the program translates it. You can also mark the word and add it to your vocabulary list.

The Pop-Up Dictionary has English, Russian, German, French, and Hebrew interfaces. There are around fifty dictionaries for twenty-two languages available on the Web site. But you can change, add, and create new entries at any time. If you're up to the challenge, you can always create and contribute a new dictionary to Ice-LC Software. If it's accepted, not only will your name be added to the site, but you'll also receive a free copy of the program. Good luck with your adventures in language my friends! I'm off to learn some more French, the language of love, of course!
